Together, we build strong communities.
At Habitat for Humanity of Wicomico County, we do more than build houses—we help families build brighter futures. Every home we construct is purchased by a partner family who meets our rigorous selection criteria. These hardworking families earn 30–80% of the area’s median income, maintain steady employment, and demonstrate a true need for safe, affordable housing. In return, they purchase their homes through a zero-percent-interest equivalent mortgage and a shared equity agreement that ensures long-term stability and community investment.
But our work doesn’t stop at new construction. Through our Critical Home Repair Program, we help low-income older adults remain safely in their homes with essential repairs—from leaky roofs to accessibility modifications. With in-house funding and partnerships with USDA Rural Development and Maryland DHCD, we make these repairs possible through zero-interest loans and grants, preserving dignity and independence for our senior neighbors.
In 2020, we expanded our mission to include workforce development with the launch of HabiCorps—a program that provides job training and soft skills to individuals rebuilding their lives after incarceration. Although initial funding has waned, our commitment hasn’t. We’ve continued this life-changing work by partnering with local high schools, the Career Technology Education Carpentry Program, and Wicomico Drug Court. Today, we proudly serve as a host site for the Maryland Service Year Option / MD Corps, AmeriCorps, and the Board of Education Works Program, keeping our mission of empowerment alive and growing.
And when you shop, donate, or volunteer at our Habitat ReStores, you’re part of that mission too! Our ReStores accept donations of gently used furniture, appliances, and building materials, keeping them out of landfills and giving them new life in our community. Every sale helps fund Habitat’s work right here in Wicomico and Somerset Counties. With the opening of our second ReStore in Fruitland, MD, in June 2024, we’re doubling our impact—and doubling the good we can do together.
