OUR HISTORY
Established in 1965, the Somerset County Historical Society was created with a generous gift from Helen Watts Roberts. In 1996, the Society, in cooperation with Olde Princess Anne Days, supported the formation of Friends of Teackle Mansion, Inc., to raise money to restore Teackle Mansion. In 2000, the Boards of Directors for the Society and for Olde Princess Anne Days, Inc. merged. The Somerset County Historical Society carved out an ambitious mission for its volunteer Board of Trustees and members, documenting and interpreting the past for residents and visitors, both young and old. The Society holds monthly meetings, supports restoration & preservation work, acquires objects of historical significance, investigates local and regional history, and organizes events and programs designed to share Somerset County history and culture.
MISSION
To collect, preserve, & document Somerset County’s historical assets;
To provide a variety of stimulating educational programs & initiatives;
To encourage others to actively participate!
TEACKLE WINDOW BLINDS
As part of our continuing efforts to the restore the many windows in the Teackle Mansion, several of our board members feel strongly that the Venetian blinds are in serious need of restoration. They are particularly critical in protecting the numerous fabrics and other materials in our collection from sun exposure. These original blinds were precisely manufactured in accord with those that may have been used in the Mansion’s earliest period.
Since their installation in approximately 2000, all blinds have deteriorated to the extent that most were removed from the windows and stored in the mansion. The primary decay has occurred in the cloth “tape” that secures the laths, causing portions of the blinds to break apart. The laths, on the other hand, mainly have held up well, except for some sun bleaching.
In 2023 eight blinds on the lower level of the house were shipped to the original maker, Devenco Wooden Blinds, in Bainbridge, Georgia. They were beautifully restored at a 2023 cost of $360 each. Though costs have likely risen in the past 2 years, a figure of $400 per blind is a reasonable estimate of the cost to repair each of the approximately 24 blinds that should be restored to the most critical windows.
TEACKLE WINDOWS:
Teackle Mansion has over 75 Windows. All of which are in need of repair and restoration. Finding a professional who can repair and restore the windows with historic accuracy isn't easy, but we do have that professional available to start with repairs. Any amount you wish to donate is greatly appreciated. Window sponsorships are available, the amount for sponsorship is $3,000.00.
