The Stephen Long Worcester High Pioneers organization honors the legacy of Professor Stephen Handy Long, Worcester County's first Supervisor of Colored Schools (1914). Professor Long was a fearless champion for justice and education--a man who refused to accept a world that denied Black children the right to learn. With unyielding courage, Long fought to build quality schools and opportunities for those confined by the chains of segregation. His passion for equality carried him into the very heart of the U.S. court system, where he dared to challenge the powerful on behalf of the powerless.
In 1921, Long's pursuit of justice struck a mighty blow against oppression: through the courts, Professor Long compelled a wealthy Worcester County farming family to send two Black orphan boys to school--a victory for dignity and human rights. But that triumph came at a devastating cost. Soon after Maryland's Orphans Court removed the boys from that family's custody, violence met courage in the streets of Pocomoke City. There, before the eyes of his 13-year-old daughter, Professor Stephen Handy Long was brutally stabbed to death by a member of the very family he had challenged.
Professor Stephen Handy Long died as he lived--standing for truth, fighting for justice, and daring to believe that education could liberate a people.
The Stephen Long Worcester High Pioneers organization is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, founded in 2022 to grant $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school graduates from Worcester County, Maryland, where Professor Stephen Handy Long served as that county's first Supervisor of Colored Schools from 1914 to 1921. All scholarship recipients must commit to attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), continuing Professor Long's legacy of excellence in education and community impact.
Over a two and one-half year period, committed and determined African American graduates from the former, segregated Stephen Long Elementary School in Pocomoke City have accomplished what many thought impossible. Without securing a single dollar of government assistance, these graduates have rallied together and raised more than $22,000, which is a testament to the power of unity, memory, and purpose. To date, SL-WHP has awarded $1,000 scholarships to three students who are currently enrolled at the following HBCUs: Bowie State, Morgan State, and Howard universities.
Now, the Stephen Long-Worcester High Pioneers (SL-WHP) organization is pressing forward with bold resolve. Its mission: to grow its current endowment to $40,000, ensuring that two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded every year, FOREVER. This is not just fundraising--it is legacy building, a living tribute to generations who turned struggle into strength and transformed education into empowerment.
