The Community Players of Salisbury, Inc., one of the oldest continuously operating community theaters in Maryland, has been a part of the Salisbury community for over 88 years. In 1937 a group of 26 charter members, with the purpose of bringing culture and pure entertainment to the Eastern Shore and providing an outlet for people interested in dramatics, began the process. The Players were organized under the Recreation Division of the Works Progress Administration.

The next 16 years were filled with an eclectic collection of season productions. The number of shows produced in each season varied from as few as two to as many as five. Then, in 1964, the format changed dramatically with the introduction of a major musical production to open the season. The first musical, Guys & Dolls, was presented in November of that year. The musical was highly successful and as a result a major musical production has been part of the season format ever since.

Currently the Community Players of Salisbury regularly produce four main stage productions within the season, a major musical, and three additional shows, comedies, dramas and/or an additional musical. To our regular season we have added Special Productions to widen our outreach. We have a Youth Theatre Summer Camp and offer advice, costumes, set pieces and props to TriCounty schools at no charge.

Community Players is committed to celebrating an inclusive culture of creativity by welcoming actors, technicians, designers, musicians, and production team members from varied backgrounds with regards to race, ethnicity, national origin, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, physical & mental ability, and religious & political beliefs.

Mission

The mission of Community Players of Salisbury shall be to encourage education, interest and participation in theatre and to provide quality theatrical productions for the local audiences.

Needs

We are growing and building our very own performance space! While we build, we continue to bring four mainstage productions and special shows to the Lower Shore. It takes a village to make theatre happen. Specific needs for this exciting and huge endeavor to follow. For now, we need stage lighting, stage make-up, a stately desk for Daddy Warbucks in Annie, colonial costumes for 1776 and screen doors for To Kill a Mockingbird. We will keep updating our needs throughout the year.
