1 Year to Empowerment, operated under The Child & Family Foundation Inc., was created in 2014 as a free, year-long program to support teenage girls struggling with mental health challenges and making unhealthy life choices. The idea was developed by local child psychologist, Dr. Samantha Scott and based upon principles of psychology regarding mental health wellness and intrinsic motivation for personal growth. Over the course of one year, Empowerees engage in many meaningful and empowering activities such as aerial yoga and meditation, self-defense and boxing workshops, learning how to change a tire and perform car maintenance, a CPR/first aid and babysitting certification course, a career day, and building a wheelchair ramp for a community member in need. Empowerees also engage in several future-oriented activities such as personal finance, college tours, and visiting women-owned businesses. The end of the year culminates with our Transformation Banquet, where Empowerees are honored for their commitment to the program and growth throughout the year, and we welcome a new cohort of teens.
