Thomas E. Polk, Sr. served in an all-Black U.S. Regular Army troop. These soldiers were commonly referred to as Buffalo Soldiers. He made sure to save as much as he could to purchase land when he returned home to Maryland. The land he successfully purchased is now the Buffalo Soldier Living History Site (The Outpost) at 4013 S Upper Ferry Rd, Eden, MD 21822. His grandchildren did not want to sell the land Mr. Polk, Sr. worked so hard to purchase and care for. Instead, to honor his memory they created a non-profit to keep his memory alive along with the memory of those first all-black troops. The first step was Hattie's Trail, named for their grandmother and Mr. Polk's wife. Next is getting the property ready for a museum. It has been a long and slow process that we are still working towards. No matter the challenges your help brings us closer to our goals to provide a space for learning about how the families of people like Thomas and Hattie Polk lived.
